Kilner Jar Guide: Which Kilner Jar for Which Job

Kilner has been making glass jars since 1842, and the range now covers everything from jam jars to fermentation sets and drinks dispensers. This guide sorts the range by job, using Kilner's own product information, so you can choose the right jar first time. Shop the full range in our Kilner collection.

Preserve jars: jams, chutneys and pickles

Kilner Preserve Jars use a two-piece lid made up of a tin sealing disc and a screw band. Together they create a vacuum seal that keeps the contents fresher for longer. Kilner suggests these sizes:

The glass jars are dishwasher safe. Kilner says the disc and screw band should be hand washed and dried straight away.

Wide mouth preserve jars: whole fruit and vegetables

Wide Mouth Preserve Jars use the same two-piece lid, but the wider opening makes it easier to fill and decant whole fruit and vegetables. They also have ml volume markings embossed on the side. Kilner recommends wide mouth jars for pickling vegetables such as carrots and asparagus.

Fruit-shaped preserve jars

For serving homemade jam, the 400ml Berry Fruit Preserve Jar has a novelty shape inspired by raspberries and blackberries, with the same two-piece screw band and disc lid. There is also a 400ml Strawberry Fruit Jar.

Clip top jars: preserving and pantry storage

Kilner Clip Top Jars have a rubber seal and a stainless steel clip system that Kilner says is engineered to give an airtight seal every time. They suit both preserving and storing dry foods, and the jars are suitable for the dishwasher.

Kilner describes the square shape as space-saving for the pantry. Its larger sizes are suggested for whole fruit and vegetables, as well as dry foods such as cereals, pasta and biscuits.

Bottles and drinks dispensers

Kilner Clip Top Bottles are designed for homemade drinks, sauces, cordials and infused oils. Kilner says they are not suitable for carbonated liquids. The range also includes Juice and Sauce Bottles that fit in the fridge door, an oil bottle set and glass drinks dispensers. See our Kilner bottles guide for sizes and care.

Fermenting, butter making and sourdough

Kilner's Create & Make range covers home food projects:

Replacement seals and preserving accessories

Seals and lids are made to fit specific jar types and sizes, so check before you buy. Our replacement seals guide lists which part fits which jar. For preserving days, the range also includes the 8 litre Jam Pan, the Easy Fill Funnel and the Muslin Square.

Looking after your Kilner jars

Kilner warns never to pour boiling water directly into its jars or bottles. If you are preserving, always sterilise the jars first. Our sterilising guide walks through Kilner's recommended method, and Preserving with Kilner Jars takes you from filling to storing.
