Kilner makes three main styles of preserving jar. They look similar, but they seal differently and take different replacement parts. Here's how they compare, based on Kilner's own product information. Shop all three in our Kilner collection.

Kilner Preserve Jars
Kilner's Preserve Jar uses a two-piece lid, a tin disc and a screw band, that creates a vacuum seal. Kilner matches each size to a job: 250ml for jams, jellies and chutneys, 500ml for jams, chutneys and small pickled fruits, and 1 litre for pickled vegetables, whole fruits and chunky chutneys.

Kilner Wide Mouth Preserve Jars
These use the same disc and screw band system, but with a wider opening. Kilner says this makes it easy to fill and decant whole fruit and vegetables, and recommends them for pickling vegetables like carrots and asparagus. They also have ml volume markings embossed on the side.

Kilner Clip Top Jars
Clip Top Jars close with a stainless steel clip system and a rubber seal. Kilner says the clips are engineered for the right tension to give an airtight seal every time. As well as preserving, they're popular for pantry staples such as cereals, pasta, rice and flour. Kilner describes the square shape as space-saving.

Sealing and checking each type
Kilner's preserving guide treats the two lid systems differently:
- Preserve and Wide Mouth jars: place the disc on the filled jar, add the screw band and tighten. After 24 hours, press the disc. If it doesn't move, the jar has sealed.
- Clip Top jars: fit the seal, close the clips, then cover the jar with water and boil for 30 minutes. Leave it to cool in the water. After 24 hours, undo the clip and lift the jar by the lid. If the lid holds, the jar has sealed.

Replacement parts don't swap between types
Each jar style takes its own parts. Kilner notes that Genuine Preserve screw bands don't fit Wide Mouth jars, and that the 1 litre Wide Mouth jar uses different seals and bands from the smaller Wide Mouth sizes. Our replacement seals guide lists exactly what fits what.
