Fermenting vegetables at home is simple with the right jar. Kilner makes fermentation sets in different sizes, depending on how much you want to make. This guide explains how they work, based on Kilner's own product information. Shop them in our Kilner collection.
How Kilner fermentation jars work
During fermentation, gas builds up inside the jar. Kilner's fermentation lids have a valve or airlock that lets that gas escape without letting air back in. Kilner notes that air getting into the jar is what usually causes fermented foods to go mouldy. To get started, Kilner says you just need your favourite vegetables, filtered water and salt.
Kilner Fermentation Jar Set of 2 (1 litre)
The Fermentation Jar Set of 2 is designed for smaller batches. Kilner suggests it for sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles and more.
- Two 1 litre jars, each with a lid containing a silicone valve that releases gas and blocks air
- Comes in a gift box with a recipe and instruction booklet
- Care: Kilner says the jars are dishwasher safe, but the lids should be hand washed and dried straight away
Kilner Fermentation Set (3 litre)
The 3 litre Fermentation Set is for larger batches. Kilner suggests fermenting a big quantity, then decanting it into smaller jars to store.
- A silicone lid with an airlock, which lets gas out but no air in
- Ceramic weights that keep the vegetables submerged under the brine, which Kilner says prevents spoilage
- Comes in a gift box with a recipe and instruction booklet
Which one should I choose?
- Trying fermenting for the first time, or making a few flavours at once? The Set of 2 gives you two smaller batches.
- Making sauerkraut or kimchi in bulk? The 3 litre set handles larger quantities, and the ceramic weights keep everything under the brine.
Follow the instruction booklet included with your set for recipes, quantities and fermenting times.
