Scanpan is best known for its non-stick cookware, and it makes the coating itself. This guide explains Scanpan's Stratanium and Stratanium+ non-stick, answers common questions about safety and metal utensils, and compares the non-stick ranges we stock, using information from Scanpan's official websites. Where is Scanpan non-stick made?
Scanpan says all of its non-stick cookware is made in Denmark.
Stratanium vs Stratanium+
- Stratanium is Scanpan's patented non-stick system, released in 2017. Scanpan says its layered construction makes it safe to use with metal utensils and highly durable, and that it has a smooth surface.
- Stratanium+ followed in 2018. It's a textured, commercial-grade surface that Scanpan says was tested in restaurants and is about 50% more durable than Stratanium under heavy use. It's designed for searing.
Scanpan rates both coatings as metal-utensil safe and dishwasher safe, with a lifetime warranty.
Is Scanpan non-stick safe?
These are Scanpan's own answers:
- PFOA and PFOS: Scanpan says its products contain no PFOA or PFOS.
- PTFE: Scanpan says its coating does contain some PTFE, which provides the non-stick release. It states PTFE is harmless under normal cooking conditions and only breaks down with excessive overheating.
- Aluminium: every Scanpan non-stick pan has an aluminium core, which Scanpan says is fully sealed beneath the coating so it never touches food.
- Looking ahead: for its 70th anniversary in 2026, Scanpan presented Stratanium Leap, a coating it says is produced without PFAS.
Can I use metal utensils?
Yes. Scanpan says its non-stick is metal-utensil safe. Over time you may see cosmetic scuffs, but Scanpan says these don't breach the surface or affect performance.

How to get the best from your non-stick
- Preheat the empty pan on low to medium heat for a minute or two. Scanpan says its cast aluminium heats quickly and evenly, so medium heat is enough to sear.
- Use any cooking oil, but never aerosol sprays. Scanpan says spray residue is hard or impossible to remove, and that damage from it isn't covered by warranty.
- Wash after every use in warm soapy water and dry thoroughly. Scanpan says cast-aluminium pans can be washed while still hot.
- Hand wash where you can. Scanpan says its non-stick is dishwasher safe, but frequent dishwashing can dry the surface out.
- If food starts sticking, it's usually residue. Scanpan suggests boiling a baking soda solution (1 tablespoon to 2 cups of water) in the pan for 5 minutes, standing it for 30 minutes, then cleaning.
