What Is a Batter Bowl? A Guide to Mason Cash Batter Bowls

If you've ever tried to pour pancake batter from a mixing bowl and ended up with drips down the side and a puddle on the bench, you already understand why the batter bowl exists. It's one of the most useful pieces Mason Cash makes, and one of the most overlooked. This guide explains what a batter bowl is, what it's good for and how the Mason Cash designs we stock compare. Browse them all in our Mason Cash collection.

What is a batter bowl?

A batter bowl is a mixing bowl with two extra features: a strong handle on one side and a pouring lip on the other. You mix in it just like a regular bowl, then pick it up by the handle and pour your mixture straight into the pan, tin or waffle iron.

Mason Cash batter bowls are built around the same ideas as their famous mixing bowls. The handle lets the bowl stay sturdy and in place while you mix, and on many designs the patterned or embossed exterior gives you extra grip.

What can you use a batter bowl for?

Anything runny that you need to pour is a good fit:

  • Pancakes and pikelets: mix, then pour neat rounds straight into the pan.
  • Crepes: the lip helps you pour a thin, even layer.
  • Yorkshire puddings: pour batter into hot tins quickly and cleanly.
  • Cake and muffin batters: fill tins and cases with less mess.
  • Whisking eggs: for omelettes, scrambled eggs or quiche filling.
  • Waffles: pour directly onto the waffle iron.

Many people find a batter bowl also becomes their go-to for small everyday mixing jobs, because the handle makes it easy to hold at an angle while you whisk.

Batter bowl vs mixing bowl: do you need both?

A mixing bowl is better for stiff doughs, bread and large quantities, because it's wider and has no handle in the way when you knead. A batter bowl is better for anything you need to pour. If you only bake cakes and bread occasionally, a mixing bowl will do most jobs. If pancakes are a weekend ritual in your house, a batter bowl earns its place quickly. Many bakers own one of each. Our Mason Cash mixing bowl guide covers the mixing bowl side of the decision.

The Mason Cash batter bowls we stock

The batter bowls below hold around 2 litres, a comfortable size for a family batch of pancakes. The main differences are design and material.

Cane Batter Bowl

The Cane batter bowl pairs the traditional cane exterior with a cream interior, matching the classic mixing bowls. It holds 1.9 litres and measures 25cm long, 19cm wide and 13cm high. If you already own Cane mixing bowls, this is the natural companion.

Nautical Navy Batter Bowl

The Nautical Navy batter bowl is embossed with under-the-sea creatures and finished in a deep blue glaze. It holds 1.9 litres and is made from hard-wearing stoneware. It pairs with the Nautical Navy 29cm mixing bowl.

Rustic Charm Batter Bowl

The Rustic Charm batter bowl takes a more contemporary approach, inspired by French Provincial country kitchens, with a subtle debossed heart motif and a mix of matt and gloss finishes. It's made from chip-resistant stoneware and measures about 26.5cm long, 20cm wide and 12.5cm high.

In the Forest Owl Cream Batter Bowl

The In the Forest Owl Cream batter bowl is embossed with forest scenes inspired by mid-19th century folk tales and holds 2 litres. It's a charming match for the rest of the In the Forest collection.

In the Meadow Cream Batter Bowl

The In the Meadow Cream batter bowl is embossed with delicate florals and foliage and made from chip-resistant stoneware. It holds 1.9 litres. See the full In the Meadow collection.

How to choose

  • Matching an existing set? Choose the batter bowl from the same range as your mixing bowls: Cane, Nautical, In the Forest or In the Meadow.
  • Want a modern look? Rustic Charm has a softer, more contemporary style.
  • Buying a gift? The embossed In the Forest and In the Meadow designs make a batter bowl feel special.

Tips for using a batter bowl

  1. Add dry ingredients first, make a well, then add the wet ingredients and whisk outwards. This helps avoid lumps.
  2. Rest pancake or crepe batter in the bowl if your recipe calls for it. Cover it and it's ready to pour when you are.
  3. Pour steadily from the lip close to the pan for neat, even pancakes.
  4. Pair it with a measuring set. Our guide to Mason Cash measuring cups and spoons covers matching options.

Caring for your batter bowl

Our listings describe the Cane, Rustic Charm and In the Meadow batter bowls as dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe, and the Nautical and In the Forest batter bowls as dishwasher safe. Check the individual product page for full care notes, and avoid sudden temperature changes. For more tips, see our Mason Cash care FAQ.
