Measuring cups and spoons are the kind of thing most of us buy once and forget about, usually a set of plastic ones that end up mismatched in the back of a drawer. Mason Cash takes a different approach: stoneware measuring sets that match their mixing bowls, look good enough to leave on the bench and make a lovely gift. This guide compares the measuring cups, spoons and jugs we stock and shares a few tips for using them with Australian recipes. Browse them all in our Mason Cash collection.
Measuring cups
Rustic Charm Measuring Cups (set of 3)
The Rustic Charm measuring cups are made from stoneware in neutral tones, with the range's subtle debossed heart and a mix of matt and gloss finishes. The set includes 1 cup, ½ cup and ¼ cup, and the cups nest inside each other for easy storage.
In the Meadow Measuring Cups (set of 3)
The In the Meadow measuring cups carry the collection's delicate floral embossing. The set includes 1 cup, ½ cup and ¼ cup, and is made from stoneware. They're listed as dishwasher and microwave safe.
Innovative Kitchen Measuring Cups (set of 3)
The Innovative Kitchen measuring cups are a clever multi-measure set. Between the three pieces, they incorporate 1 cup, ½ cup, ⅓ cup and ¼ cup measurements as well as tablespoon and teaspoon measures, so a set of three covers more than three amounts. They're listed as microwave and dishwasher safe.
Measuring spoons
Rustic Charm Measuring Spoons (set of 3)
The Rustic Charm measuring spoons are made from stoneware and include 1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon and ½ teaspoon. They pair naturally with the Rustic Charm cups.
In the Meadow Measuring Spoons (set of 4)
The In the Meadow measuring spoons include ¼ teaspoon, ½ teaspoon, 1 teaspoon and 1 tablespoon, giving you the most common spoon measures in one stoneware set.
Measuring jugs
In the Forest Fox Stone Measuring Jug 1L
The In the Forest measuring jug holds 1 litre and has internal markings in millilitres and fluid ounces. It's made from chip-resistant stoneware and embossed with a forest scene featuring a fox.
Innovative Kitchen Measuring Jug 1L
The Innovative Kitchen measuring jug also holds 1 litre but is designed to tilt. Resting at an angle on the bench, it makes it easier to whisk and incorporate air, so it doubles as a small mixing jug. It's listed as microwave and dishwasher safe.
A note for Australian recipes
Measurements are not quite the same everywhere, which matters if you bake from Australian cookbooks:
- Tablespoons: an Australian tablespoon is 20ml, while a UK or US tablespoon is 15ml.
- Cups: an Australian metric cup is 250ml. US cups are slightly smaller.
- Teaspoons: a teaspoon is 5ml in Australia, the UK and the US.
Mason Cash is a British brand, so it's worth checking the volume of the tablespoon and cup in your set against your recipe. For most cooking the difference is small, but in baking, especially with raising agents such as baking powder and bicarbonate of soda, it can affect the result. If your set's tablespoon is 15ml and your Australian recipe calls for a tablespoon, you can add an extra teaspoon to make up the 20ml.
Which set should you choose?
- Want the most measures in the fewest pieces? The Innovative Kitchen multi-measure cups.
- Love florals? Pair the In the Meadow cups and spoons, and match them with the In the Meadow mixing bowls.
- Prefer a soft, modern look? The Rustic Charm cups and spoons.
- Measuring liquids often? Add a 1 litre jug: the In the Forest jug for character, or the Innovative Kitchen tilting jug if you also whisk in it.
Tips for accurate measuring
- Spoon and level dry ingredients. Spoon flour into the cup, then level the top with the back of a knife rather than packing it down.
- Pack brown sugar firmly unless your recipe says otherwise.
- Read liquids at eye level with the jug on a flat surface.
- Use the same set throughout a recipe, so any small differences stay consistent.
