Zippo Lighter Care FAQ

Want your Zippo to light first time, every time? A little regular maintenance keeps these classic windproof lighters performing well for years. Here's the straightforward care guide based on official Zippo advice, tailored for Australian owners. Browse the full Zippo range.

How do I fill a Zippo lighter?

  1. Remove the inside unit, or insert, from the case.
  2. Turn it over and lift the felt pad to reveal the packing material.
  3. Slowly saturate the packing with genuine Zippo Premium Lighter Fluid until the fluid reaches the top of the packing or begins to change colour. Do not overfill.
  4. Wipe any excess fluid from the lighter and your hands, then reinsert the unit into the case.

Always fill away from any flame or heat source. Fluid evaporates even when the lighter is not used, so keep the lid closed and refuel as needed.

How often should I replace the flint?

Flints wear out with use, roughly every few weeks for average users. To replace:

  1. Remove the insert from the case.
  2. Unscrew the flint spring, using a small screwdriver or coin, as it is under tension so hold it carefully.
  3. Tap out any remaining flint pieces and clear the tube if needed.
  4. Insert a new genuine Zippo flint.
  5. Replace the spring and tighten fully so the lid closes properly.

You can store spare flints under the felt pad.

How do I maintain or replace the wick?

The wick turns black with carbon build up over time. Trim it once or twice a year by gently pulling the wick up with tweezers or pliers until clean wick appears, then trimming the end level with the top of the chimney. After two or three trimmings the wick will need full replacement.

How do I clean the outside of a Zippo?

  • High polish chrome: use chrome polish.
  • Brush finish: gently clean with a light or medium Scotch-Brite pad, never steel wool.
  • Brass: clean carefully, as brass can tarnish.
  • Gold plated: wipe gently with a soft cloth and water or a little Zippo fluid, avoiding abrasives.

Always wipe spilled fluid off the case, as it can harm some finishes.

What should I avoid?

  • Non-genuine fluid, flints or wicks, as performance suffers
  • Forcing or overusing the hinge
  • Altering the insert
  • Leaving the lid open when not in use, as this speeds up fluid evaporation

With genuine Zippo fluid, regular flint changes and occasional wick care, your lighter will stay reliable in windy Aussie conditions for years.
